The above map shows some of my completed island mapping projects. Each icon contains the name of the primary island associated with the project and a link to the post. Once all of my projects are posted, the map will be covered with icons. To productively use the map, zoom into a region of interest. Then select an icon.

Each of my maps is constructed of numerous layers of information. All of the layers are vector files. I will make these files available upon request. You are free to use them with certain restrictions - 1) Don't sell them. You can use them on research projects, post them to your website or things of that nature. If you aren't sure about the use of my maps, drop me a line and we can discuss your idea. 2) Give me credit when you use my vectors or images of my maps. Credit them to Peter Minton @ EVS-Islands

If I have the island vector file(s) and based upon your need, I will make them available. Images of my maps are yours to download and use, with the above restrictions applicable. Enjoy!

Thoughts - Want To Try A LIIM? Drop Me A Line.

Greek and Turkish LIIMs

59 Greek and Turkish Island LIIMs

Like I said in my previous post, I wanted to complete the primary Landsat Island Image Mosaics (LIIM) for the Greek and Turkish islands located in the Aegean Sea before I returned to school. Well, I'm done. The largest LIIM, at 100MBs, is the 3-sections (West, Central and East) covering Crete. All of the large Greek and Turkish islands located in the Aegean Sea are now covered by a LIIM. What does this mean to you?

Not much, if you have your own collection of Landsat ETM+ mosaics. Or, you are a user of Google Earth or World Wind and you say, "I have all of the imagery. What do I need with LIIMs?

I make maps using Landsat ETM+ imagery as my base image. Using Global Mapper's digitizing tools, I am able to create complex vector layers of information. I've used the digitizing tools found in Google Earth. They are good, but not great. And if you make a series of polygons, you must create a unique record for each polygon. Not practical when you create hundreds of polygons on a single map.

I need some of you to try the LIIMs out. Give me the name of a Greek or Turkish island and I'll send you a copy of the appropriate LIIM. Let me know what you think? Is it useful?

Enjoy!

#4 - Where In The World Is This Port Located (Neka, Iran) and Why Is It A Threat (Read Below)?

Crude Oil Port

Crude Oil Port

Crude Oil Port, Detail

Crude Oil Port, Detail

Peio of MAGIC Instinct Software knows his ports. He knows that this relatively recent Iranian port is located at the southern end of the Caspian Sea. I am still wondering if any of you know why it is a threat to the big 5 oil companies? Why it allows Russia and Iran to further bond national and economic interests? How Russian oil off-loaded at this small port turns into Iranian oil at Iran's Persian Gulf oil facilities?

I don't mean to be cryptic. The Neka port is able to off-load Russian oil and trade it for an equal amount of Iranian oil at Iran's Persian Gulf facilities - a barrel of Russian crude for a barrel of Iranian crude. Iran forms an economic alliance with Russia, Russia circumvents the Baku-Tiblisi-Ceyhan pipeline running from the Caspian area through Turkey and terminating at Turkey's Mediterranean port of Ceyhan. Iran gains a superpower ally and Russia gains a Middle Eastern foothold without fighting a war.

My website is about making maps. It isn't about my political, economic or social opinions. With that said, I'll get back to my world of maps and mapmaking

Enjoy!

Peio added the following as to why this port is considered to be a threat to the big 5 oil companies: Maybe because of the “Great Caspian Sea Oil Pipeline Game” : a
pipeline route through Iran would be the shortest and possibly
cheapest route for oil to Asian markets for the five states
surrounding the Caspian Sea (Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran
and Azerbaijan) which also discuss how to divide the resource-rich
seabed, referred to large oil reserves in the southern Caspian.
So the issue is about conflicts of interest over pipeline routes and
the U.S. tries to not leave them to Russia and Iran.

By the way, according to this businessman from Esfahan Haftom-e-Tir Industries in Esfahan (Iran), the access to Google Earth is no more possible from his country :

Bozca Ada and Karayer Adalari TU

Bozca Ada and Karayer Adalari TU

These islands are located just outside of the Dardanelles, a strategically important strait controlling access to Istanbul and ultimately the Black Sea. Many ships transporting a number of resources pass within close proximity to these islands. Currently, the islands are used as tourist destinations. The small islands to the north, Karayer Adalari, are located even closer to the entrance to the Dardanelles.

Directly opposite the eastern shore of the island is the reputed location of the ancient city of Troy. These islands were used during the Trojan Wars, according to historians of the period.

I will aim you to one web site that claims to be the ultimate Bozca Ada link. It is an informative site for the casual cyber visitors and would be productive for the tourist anticipating a visit.

I primarily used Google Earth - Digital Globe imagery for this project. It allowed me to accomplish some detailed mapping - Bozca Ada Village, for example. Nothing too fancy, but a good map.

Enjoy!

PS - This island is also known as Tenedos. However, since Turkey rules, Bozca Ada is the correct name.
