The above map shows some of my completed island mapping projects. Each icon contains the name of the primary island associated with the project and a link to the post. Once all of my projects are posted, the map will be covered with icons. To productively use the map, zoom into a region of interest. Then select an icon.

Each of my maps is constructed of numerous layers of information. All of the layers are vector files. I will make these files available upon request. You are free to use them with certain restrictions - 1) Don't sell them. You can use them on research projects, post them to your website or things of that nature. If you aren't sure about the use of my maps, drop me a line and we can discuss your idea. 2) Give me credit when you use my vectors or images of my maps. Credit them to Peter Minton @ EVS-Islands

If I have the island vector file(s) and based upon your need, I will make them available. Images of my maps are yours to download and use, with the above restrictions applicable. Enjoy!

Data - Free Benthic Habitats Map Files of Pacific Islands

Shallow-Water Benthic Habitats

Benthic Habitats, better known as reefs, are a closely researched phenomena. Many governmental groups carefully study these ecosystems in an effort to take the temperature of Planet Earth. If the reefs are sick, they reflect the condition of the bigger patient, Planet Earth. Consequently, reefs are keenly studied.

Shallow-Water Benthic Habitats Manual

Shallow-Water Benthic Habitats Manual

After reading the above manual, which I downloaded some time ago, I decided to re-explore the origninating website - Shallow Water Benthic Habitats of Pacific Islands.  "The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Ocean Service (NOS) initiated a coral reef research program in 1999 to map, assess, inventory, and monitor U.S. coral reef ecosystems (Monaco et al. 2001)."  During my revisit to the site I noticed a link called Data.  You all know that I love data, especially data that has to do with mapping islands.  And that is exactly what this link leads to - numerous shapefiles of islands, reefs systems, image mosaics, ground control points, etc.  It is a treasure trove of information.  The shapefiles loaded quickly and easily into Global Mapper.  To gain maximum benefit they should be loaded into ESRI product to read all of the mapped data completely.  The data did load into ArcExplorer Java Edition for Educators (AEJEE).  The slideshow includes images of some of this data files displayed in Global Mapper.

In addition, this site leads to the Center of Coastal Monitoring and Assessment, which has a large number of additional coastal studies either completed or underway.  Most of them contain free small scale mapping.

Have a good time scrounging free data.  Enjoy!

Paraoa Atoll FP

Paraoa Atoll FP

Hao Paraoa (19˚08'S., 140˚41'W.) is wooded and its lagoon is inaccessible. The atoll is a dependency of Hao. In passing to windward of the atoll, attention should be given to the current, which has been observed to set strongly toward it. (SD Pub-126)

A small atoll located in the Mid to Southern Tuamotus.  These very small atolls always fascinate me.  I guess it is the Robinson Crusoe in me that longs for a visit to a place like this. It is reported to be uninhabited, visited occasionally.

The Landsat imagery for this atoll is cloud obscured in parts.  I had to supplement that base imagery with Space Shuttle imagery to fill in the blanks.  The map does include identification of cloud obscured areas.

Enjoy!

    Purchase Global Mapper v9

    Trial Download Global Mapper v9

A moderately priced, easy-to-use GIS package, which I use to load, view and work with Landsat ETM+ imagery from which I digitize layers of information for my island maps.
