The above map shows some of my completed island mapping projects. Each icon contains the name of the primary island associated with the project and a link to the post. Once all of my projects are posted, the map will be covered with icons. To productively use the map, zoom into a region of interest. Then select an icon.

Each of my maps is constructed of numerous layers of information. All of the layers are vector files. I will make these files available upon request. You are free to use them with certain restrictions - 1) Don't sell them. You can use them on research projects, post them to your website or things of that nature. If you aren't sure about the use of my maps, drop me a line and we can discuss your idea. 2) Give me credit when you use my vectors or images of my maps. Credit them to Peter Minton @ EVS-Islands

If I have the island vector file(s) and based upon your need, I will make them available. Images of my maps are yours to download and use, with the above restrictions applicable. Enjoy!

Data: Ni'ihau Island HW - Using The USGS HDC Free Data

The above sequence of images and maps took about 1-hour to construct using the USGS Hawaii Data Clearinghouse data, Global Mapper and Marplot. Normally the shoreline would have required many hours to digitize. And forget about the hypsographic layer. I don't have the expertise, resources, time or inclination. However, like any map-aholic, I love the addition of hypsographic data. Especially using mapping software that lets you easily switch between layers of information.

What I could have done to enhance the map would be to separate the hypsography layer into specific elevation levels (100-m, 200-m, etc.). I can't get over how easy it was to construct the above maps. When the data is available and you have the software that is easy to use, maps follow quickly. Happy mapping!

Data: Fantastic Data for Hawaiian Islands and It's Free!

The data is a map-aholics dream. The vector files cover all aspects of each of the islands geography. The raster images are stunning.

(Select the image to see a larger view)

There are eight-layers of information. Four-layers are vector data and four-layers are raster data. I easily imported (without unzipping the data) directly into Global Mapper for immediate viewing. The setup of this site is effortless to negotiate and the data is great.

A second data source for these islands is the Hawaii Coastal Geology Group. I first encountered this group when I snagged World Vector Shorelines reconfigured into GSHHS format. The link above contains loads of quality information about the islands along with some stunning imagery of all of the islands at extremely fine detail.

The above image does not do justice to the very large image that your will be able to download. It is excellent for a wide variety of purposes. Have fun with the data and enjoy Hawaii.

During the "hot" Cold War this island was a true "flash point". China and Taiwan, along with the US, would square off with each other with these small islands often at the center of their continuous dispute. Times really haven't changed much. China still claims these islands along with Taiwan.

What I was not aware of was the number of small islands within the Ma-tsu Tao Group that Taiwan controls. It is a cluster of small islands. I will map them all and post them as they are completed. For additional information about these islands see this link at Global Security.org

How To Contact Me to Get Free Map Files?

If you are like me, leaving a comment on somebody's blog, no matter how interesting their information is, is not something I like doing. I don't want the rest of the world reading my comment. I am private that way.

Plus, I don't want to start a contact with someone that is going to "bug the hell out of me". I am not interested in a relationship. I just want an answer to a question, or make a private observation or ask for data - and that is it. I don't want an ongoing exchange of information. Just answer my question. send data and then lose my email.

I promise if you want to gripe, make a comment, ask a question, request data, whatever, I will read your gripe or comment and not answer you unless you specifically ask me to. If you ask a question, I will answer your question promptly and to the best of my ability. If you want data and I have it to give, it is yours to get and use. When you are done, ask and I will lose your email address.

    Purchase Global Mapper v9

    Trial Download Global Mapper v9

A moderately priced, easy-to-use GIS package, which I use to load, view and work with Landsat ETM+ imagery from which I digitize layers of information for my island maps.
